“Illegal Aliens”?

Throughout 1984 and 1985, I embarked on my most extensive documentary project, photographing a crew of “undocumented” Mexican farmworkers, in the orchards of Arizona, in their homes in rural Mexico, and while crossing the U.S.-Mexico Border.

The purpose of the document was to illustrate that “illegal aliens” are really not criminals from another planet, but rather hard working migrants who contribute to our economy under extremely challenging circumstances. Moreover, I wanted viewers to see these “illegal aliens” in their own land and culture, where they are sons, brothers, husbands, fathers and pillars of their local communities.

Images from this document were published and exhibited widely. There was an exhibit of these photos in the Cannon Rotunda on Capitol Hill, during the debate over the Simpson-Rodino bill, now current law. There is also an archive of this work at Arizona State University.
