"Illegal Aliens"?
Working in Arizona

These images were taken while I lived in small dilapidated house with a crew of Mexican farmworkers, tucked deep within a citrus orchard on the outskirts of El Mirage, Arizona (just north of Phoenix).

The photos depict daily life in the U.S. for these men most of whom are friends, neighbors and/or family members from a cluster of villages in rural Queretero, Mexico. You’ll see them picking fruit, as well as hanging out in the labor camp and during occasional visits into “town”.

These workers were members of a unique union, the Arizona Farmworkers Union, that successfully organized undocumented workers in a few orchards near Phoenix. They all sent part of their earnings back home to support community development projects in their villages.
